Without a lot of money, I went door to door and surprised the establishment by winning the election with 60 percent of the vote. This was quite a feat for me being the shy person on the block. I am very proud of the fact that I conducted the election without hurting anyone in
the process. It was quite an experience serving one term as an elected official. I retired the end of 2005. In 2006 I conducted a series of workshops which led to 1,000 customers participating in opposition to a gas utility rate proposal that would have resulted in a surcharge on our gas bills because we were using less gas. The concept goes under the name of "revenue decoupling" and would have set a dangerous precedent in our region and the entire state by forcing customers to pay more for using less. Since retirement I have been writing books. As a rail transit author I have written and published 10 books on light rail systems with the latest book "Suburban Philadelphia Trolleys" released by Arcadia
Publishing Company on August 13, 2007. The 128 page book has 222 illustrations that I have taken over the last 50 years in the Philadelphia region. There is also a chapter on the work residents are doing to preserve the transportation heritage of Darby, Yeadon, Colwyn, and southwestern Philadelphia. This book notes that I graduated from Lansdowne Aldan High School in 1957 and is dedicated to my father Clarence Springirth who was a trolley car operator for the Philadelphia Transportation Company and acknowledges the work of my mother Sallie Springirth who always had dinner ready no matter what dad's work schedule entailed. My wife and I have traveled half way around the world researching, walking, riding, and photographing this unique form of transportation. My family came to Lansdowne from west Philadelphia in 1950. Lansdowne was like the promised land to us. We were working class people, and the Lansdowne public school system was excellent. High school was not easy for me, but I am thankful for the many teachers who helped me. I spent a lot of time studying to master subjects that many classmates grasped quickly, but many of those difficult classes provided tools for the challenges that we all face later in life.

I do volunteer work at the school and then go to our daughter's homeschool to help each day. After graduation, I took a stenographic course at Goldey-Beacom, in Wilmington DE. After that I was married and became a stay-at-home mother for ten years. When I turned 30, my three children were old enough for me to take a job at a law firm in downtown Philly. My life was a lot happier after that. I loved my job, and I loved working and shopping downtown.
When I was 35, I divorced my first husband and moved back to Lansdowne with my children. For a couple of years I became a Disco Queen. Then on February 1, 1977, my whole life changed. I was starting a history course given by Delaware County Community College, at Drexel Hill Middle School. It was 6:20 p.m. when I looked up at the door, and my "blessing" walked in. I knew in an instant that I had "found my thrill in Drexel Hill". I got Dom to ask me out, and we dated for about a year. One day I realized that this wonderful man loved me even more than my mother, and maybe I should marry him. I dropped hints, but finally I just told him, "I want to get married". "Well, it's o.k. with me", he said. "But just remember, if it doesn't work out, it was your idea." Well, it has worked out just fine for 30 years.
When I ws 42, I left downtown to work for Wyeth Laboratories, in Radnor. I worked there for over 20 years. When the company decided to move to Collegeville, I retired. I love being retired and am very content with my life at this time.
I will always be grateful that I grew up in Lansdowne and attend achool there in the 40's and 50's. I believe that any success I've had in my life was due to these two advantages.

Alexander Jonathan - 4 Hobbies and Activities: Going to car shows and keeping up with the young people. From Harry: Retired and moved to NC in 2000. Still married to Anne (LAHS '58), and happy about that. We now live one street away from our daughter and her family, and get to take care of the grandkids, and watch them grow. Still have one old car, and drive it to shows here, in South Carolina, and in Pennsylvania - it kind of keeps me out of trouble, mostly. Our daughter was on the PBS TV show "Everyday Edisons" this year.
